The New Jersey Supercomputer Initiative
A groundbreaking, $125+ million public-private partnership that will supercharge discovery and opportunity across the Garden State.

New Jersey’s Next Breakthrough Starts Here
The New Jersey Supercomputer Initiative (NJSCI) is a transformative public-private partnership that will expand cutting-edge research, advance world-class education and training, and create high-quality jobs across New Jersey.
As a key part of that, NJSCI will establish a state-of-the-art supercomputer that serves as a shared resource to meet the advanced computing needs of researchers, students, entrepreneurs, businesses, and other organizations across the state. This resource is expected to double the current aggregated supercomputing capacity of New Jersey’s research universities, while also leveraging the most advanced hardware. This will allow for statistical modeling, image analysis, and other cutting-edge approaches that would be impossible with conventional computers, leading to discoveries and solutions that benefit society.
This, coupled with extensive new resources for New Jersey’s workforce, will help New Jersey stay at the forefront of innovation across an array of job-creating industries.

“This initiative will establish New Jersey as a hub for cutting-edge research that supercharges the innovation economy, solves shared challenges, and improves people's lives.”
Goals
Accelerate Discovery and Innovation in New Jersey
NJSCI will expand access to key research tools and capabilities, giving researchers across New Jersey the ability to collaborate at a new scale and tackle complex challenges. This could include projects across an array of industries, such as healthcare and life sciences, environmental resilience, infrastructure, material sciences, and more.
Work is underway to review dozens of projects that could benefit from access to the Supercomputer, many of which would otherwise be impossible for individuals or their institutions to undertake alone.
Develop World-Class Education and Training for New Jerseyans
NJSCI will translate these expanded capabilities into broader opportunities for New Jersey residents.
As part of this, the AI Higher Education and Workforce Collaborative will be working across universities and colleges to strengthen education and workforce pathways. New Jersey universities and colleges will develop new curricula, hands-on training programs, and apprenticeship pathways ranging from AI literacy and responsible use to advanced computing, data science, and related disciplines. Students will gain direct experience with cutting-edge computing infrastructure through their research projects, capstones, and coursework, while building skills that employers are actively seeking.
Foster Innovation & Economic Opportunity
By connecting expertise and resources across government, academia, and industry, NJSCI will unlock new ideas, expand economic opportunity, and strengthen New Jersey's innovation economy. The initiative will help attract and retain world-class researchers, translate discoveries into New Jersey startups and businesses, and create good-paying jobs throughout the state.
NJSCI's value will be measured not only by the power of its resources, but by what it makes possible: helping disease researchers analyze troves of data to find new treatments; enabling better models of coastal flooding to protect communities; giving students experience with the tools used by leading employers; or turning a promising discovery into yet another homegrown New Jersey company.
Partners
Higher Education
All of New Jersey’s R1 and R2 universities as well as other higher education institutions are founding partners:
- Kean University
- Montclair State University
- New Jersey Institute of Technology
- New Jersey Council of County Colleges
- Princeton University
- Rowan University
- Rutgers University
- Seton Hall University
- Stevens Institute of Technology
Each institution plans to provide annual contributions to the initiative’s budget. Pathways for additional higher education institutions from across the state to participate will be announced in 2027.
Technology & Industry Leaders
Chris Malachowsky, co-founder of NVIDIA and a Monmouth County native, and Melody Malachowsky are providing a personal gift of $75 million.
SHI International, a leading IT company based in Somerset County and led by President and CEO Thai Lee, is making a $25-million investment to provide technical and strategic guidance needed to bring the initiative forward, including architecture and design, integration of the partner technology ecosystem, implementation, and the hosting and day-to-day operation of the infrastructure.
State Partners
The State of New Jersey is investing $25 million, which was appropriated for the initiative in the Fiscal Year 2026 budget.
As part of the Sherrill Administration’s whole-of-government approach, several agencies are providing planning, technical, governance, and/or other support for NJSCI, including: the New Jersey Innovation Authority, the New Jersey Economic Development Authority, the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development, and the New Jersey Office of the Secretary of Higher Education. The NJ AI Hub, a public-private partnership, is also playing a key role.
Looking Forward
NJSCI partners have established working groups to help guide initial implementation and prioritization aimed at building on New Jersey’s strengths and potential across many fields and industries.
The supercomputer will be administered starting in 2027 by NJSCI, an independent nonprofit organization, and guided by principles including transparent governance and equitable access. The supercomputer infrastructure will be hosted and operated by SHI International in its existing New Jersey facilities and the NJSCI will bring new clean energy onto New Jersey’s grid, in line with the Sherrill Administration’s overall commitment to energy affordability and sustainability.
